As long as we believe,
Nothing can come between,
The dreamer and his dream!
The Sun ( UK) have run a long article about the incident
involving Leo and the crew at sea . It was given headline news on the front
page , and a whole page inside the paper , photos of Leo and the boat and
the safety team. This article raises some very worrying questions
about the safety of this shoot ......from PussyKat of the UK..
Star Leo leaps for his life as film boat sinks in a monsoon.
Movie Idol Leonardo DiCaprio had to swim for his life when a boat he was
using for filming began sinking in shark infested waters off Thailand . He
leapt into the Indian Ocean as the monsoon whipped up 15 ft waves and
flooded the boat .
Leo his British co star Tilda Swinton and terrified crew members spent 30
minutes in the water before rescuers arrived.
Leonardo kept his cool when ordered to jump off his sinking boat, even when
told the ocean was teeming with sharks.
Safety divers said the heart throb remained calm throughout the ordeal and
even helped reassure screaming pals as they floundered in the rain lashed
Indian Ocean .
Dive master Paul Davies employed with his brother Rob to look after the
movie team told how Leo and his co star Tilda were aboard the Flying Frog,
one of two boats filming a mile off Phuket.
Paul said " We were struggling against the waves and were trying to get out
of the worst of the wild weather when suddenly the engines packed in . We
had already taken on a foot of water so I gave the order to abandon boat . I
told them we'd be safer in the sea than on board . I jumped first and Leo
was the first to follow . He was very cool . I had been body surfing with
him a few days earlier and knew that he was confident in water and a good
swimmer . Someone asked about sharks and I told them not to worry . But
there can't have been anyone who didn't at one stage think they would die."
A spokesperson for 20th Century Fox confirmed the incident and said " All
cast and crew were picked up unharmed ."
The drama began as Leo and Tilda filmed a nautical scene from The Beach.
Film crew including cameramen , makeup girls and hairdressers accompanied
them aboard a second boat.
Paul said " As soon as Rob and I arrived we could see the potential trouble
straight away . Leo had to film in a Thai duck tailed fishing boat. It was
only 15ft long , old and decrepit and HAD ALREADY TAKEN ON WATER BEFORE
GOING OUT TO SEA . ( My thoughts here .... I cannot believe the production
team were so irresponsible to let Leo or anyone else go out to sea in a
leaking old boat! There is a photograph of this boat and it is indeed VERY
decrepit ! Its a shambles , doesn't look seaworthy at all .)
More from the safety guy Paul." We immediately recommended that the shoot
NOT go ahead and that they should find another boat. But we were told that
the Art Department had chosen that particular boat and it was too late to
change as it had already been used in other scenes."
Paul went on .."We towed the Thai boat out using our 15ft boat the Flying
Frog and lashed the sterns together. We managed to get about an hours
shooting done , but when we went out for a second time all hell broke loose!"
Suddenly with Leo and the the crew all thankfully on board the Flying Frog
the other vessel was sunk by a 15ft wave .
Paul's brother Rob was on board it with a cameraman , he said "The waves
simply turned us over. I was under the water for about 30 seconds and the
cameraman even longer as he got trapped under the boat . NEITHER OF US HAD
LIFEJACKETS but luckily the Flying Frog was close enough for others to throw
some to us. "
Leonardo and the crew watched aghast as the Thai vessel disappeared . Paul
said "Then our engines packed up . I realised we would be better off in the
sea and gave the order to jump . We had already radioed for our back up
rescue boats and Leo and I gathered everybody together . Some of the make up
girls were screaming and crying , Tilda was frozen in terror . People must
have been in the water for 30 even 45 minutes . When rescue boats arrived
they could not get to us , so I ordered the group to swim with the current .
Waves were thrashing at us from all sides and containers of film equipment
threatened to crash down on us . Finally we managed to reach some better
water where rescue boats could manoeuvre and I was able to push all on board."
"Afterwards producer Andrew McDonald was kind enough to thank our boss . He
said "If not for your guys someone would have died ." The boats were tossed
about like matchwood its lucky everyone got away unscathed."
